ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

HOLLY NORMAN is a singer-songwriter, drummer and ukulele enthusiast who combines her classical roots with a love of jazz, chamber pop, and eccentric storytelling. She recorded and released her debut EP, 'Hollypop' in 2013 and currently fronts a quartet under her own name performing at venues across Melbourne. Not heard performing solo for a number of years after her relocation from her home town of Perth, this intimate performance is a chance to hear Holly’s songs both new and old in a show that will demonstrate the childlike potential of imagination and self-expression.

KAY CAI is a passionate, sensitive and versatile pianist whose personal style of improvisation has roots in both the classical and jazz tradition, and tends generally to be calming and reflective in nature. Kay has performed at venues such as the National Gallery of Victoria, BMW Edge at Federation Square, Stones of the Yarra Valley Winery, Zonzo Restaurant and more. She writes her own contemporary arrangements of old hymns, has a special interest in performing the works of women composers, and enjoys exploring the therapeutic qualities of music.

RACHEL TRAINOR is a Melbourne based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter originally from New Zealand. Her new solo project is a mix of dark folk and pop, and she draws influence from artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Chelsea Wolfe and heavier bands such as Graveyard and Greenleaf. Rachel is the drummer for Melbourne based garage/psych trio Honeybone, and can also be found playing various gigs around Melbourne for other artists and cabaret shows.

Wordfest

Come along a little earlier to this free event. I am honoured to be asked to play some piano music (6:30 - 7:00) in the beautiful surrounds of the Monash Gallery of Art. The exhibition in the room is on the theme of home, which ties in nicely with what Mariam may have to say seeing as her work supports new migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. I’m enjoying some early morning practise time now, exploring pieces that follow this theme of home, feeling safe, being surrounded by love and family.

Mariam Issa is committed to improving the lives of refugees and invites you to be a part of her world.  A co-founder of the not-for-profit organisation, RAW (Resilient Aspiring Women) and Space2b –  community spaces established to support asylum seekers, refugees and newly arrived migrants –   Mariam was awarded the Ambassador of Peace award from the Universal Peace Federation in recognition of her work promoting social cohesion amongst Melbourne’s culturally diverse population.

Mariam’s latest book is A Resilient Life.

Miley, Moon Unit and Me at Inchmeal Cafe

From Frank Zappa to Billy Ray Cyrus, Amy Winehouse to Eva Cassidy, dads and daughters in the spotlight have long been the subject of scrutiny and celebration – and are responsible for their fair share of dad jokes.

Recently returned from New Zealand Fringe Festival, in this original work actor and vocalist Tegan Jones tackles the relationships between fathers and their daughters, focusing on female vocalists and the dads who inspired them to sing.

Tegan intertwines her own stories about her father’s influence on her music with those of famous singers. Some stories will surprise you, some will make you cringe in recognition, most of them will make you want to give your dad a hug.

Joined by Kay Cai on piano.
